Dr. Julio Friedmann, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, Office of Fossil Energy, U.S. Department of Energy

Abstract
Fossil Fuels have re-emerged as a critical component of the US and global energy economy, including advances in unconventional oil and gas production, increased coal use world-wide, and geopolitical events. Similarly, increased fossil fuel abundance and use has increased carbon pollution and highlighted the need for global action to manage the challenges presented by climate change. In this changing landscape, advanced technology options present opportunities to dramatically reduce the environmental challenges from fossil-fuel use, as well as provide pathways to an energy-rich, low-carbon future. At this Transforming Energy Lecture, Dr. Friedmann will discuss current and emerging technologies to help manage the risks posed by fossil fuel use.
